Shawnee & Lenexa
The Kansas side of the Kansas City metropolitan area includes a wide variety of residential options in other cities, townships and suburbs that range from just outside the metro area to quite far south; from areas that are long developed to those that are still almost rural in feel. Housing ranges from small to large, older to brand new, and pricing that ranges just a widely. Shawnee is named for the Shawnee Indians that were relocated here in the late 1820s. During the 1950’s, the population began to grow as people began moving away from congested urban areas to the smaller outlying towns. People quickly discovered the merits of the City and the population has continued to grow ever since, more than tripling in the last three decades. With a population of just over sixty thousand, Shawnee is the third fastest growing city in the state of Kansas. Shawnee is also home to Shawnee Mission Park, a multi-use, 1,250-acre park that is the largest park in the County and the most-visited park in the entire state of Kansas. It’s home to developed facilities including a 120-acre lake popular for boating, fishing, and sailboarding, numerous picnic areas, horseback, nature trails, an archery range, dog off-leash area, the Shawnee Mission Park Beach, The Theatre in the Park and Shawnee Mission Park Marina, with boat rentals, including canoes, pedal boats, two-person sailboats and fishing boats.
